Commission on Dismantling Racism The Commission sponsored a pilgrimage to Washington, D.C., March 28-30, 2008, which culminated in the observance of “Vermont Day” on Sunday at Washington National Cathedral. The Cathedral capped its "Racial Reconciliation and Justice Week," that day in a celebration of the ministry and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 40th anniversary of his last sermon, “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution.” The preacher at the 11:15 worship service was the Honorable John Lewis, a living legend of the civil rights movement and Georgia’s representative for the 5th Congressional District. Lewis also participated in a forum prior to the service. Click here for the National Cathedral page on the forum, which has links to watch or listen to the forum and Rep. Lewis's sermon online. The Green Mountain College Choir, directed by Jim Cassarino of Trinity, Rutland, sang at the Cathedral Evensong. On Saturday, the group visited the Sandy Spring Slave Museum in Maryland and the National Museum of the American Indian. The day concluded with a visit to St. Luke’s Church, the nation’s first black Episcopal parish not founded as a mission of a white church. Their hosts led them in a series of exercises focused on racial and social justice and spoke about the challenges facing their aging congregation in a changing neighborhood. The May 2008 Mountain Echo (pdf) has an article and photos of the pilgrimage. Commission Members The Rev. Nancy Vogele,
