"Peace Talks" is
theme for 2006
Campers
attending the Rock Point Summer Conferences this summer will explore
various aspects of peace. The one-week
camp sessions begin June 25 with the High School Conference and conclude
August 5 with the All Ages Conference [see below for dates]. All sessions
take place at the diocese’s Bishop Booth Conference Center on
the shore of Lake Champlain in Burlington. The daily schedule includes
a thematic educational program, recreation (swimming, hiking, sports,
etc.), creative interest groups, and a daily cycle of prayer. Cookouts,
special programs and Banquet Night round out the week.
This year’s
thematic program on peace is based on a program developed by the National Council
of Churches, “2006 New Earth Christian Resources for Outdoors.” By
reflecting on a different word each day, campers will discover ways to
live as peacemakers, hear stories of others who have brought peace into
difficult situations, and be challenged to carry peace back into the
world when they return home. The words and accompanying scripture passages
for reflection are: Aloha (Genesis
18:1–8): Abraham and Sarah welcomed strangers into their home,
creating a safe space for relationships. Campers are welcomed into the
camp community. Shalom (Genesis
1:1—2:3): Out of chaos God created a universe where all creation
can live and flourish in peace. Campers learn to care for the creation
just as they care for one another. Be
Still (Mark 4:35–41): During a storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus
shows his power and authority to command even the wind and water. Campers practice
ways to deepen their trust in God’s care. Agape (Luke
6:27–36): Jesus instructed his followers to love their enemies, inviting
them to love everyone in the same way God loves them. Campers learn to greet
all people with God’s unconditional love. Ubuntu (Acts
2:41–47): The community of the early church shows us a community
where faith and reconciliation go hand in hand. Campers practice ways
of peace through life together in community. Heiwa (Luke
4:16–21): Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah and proclaims that God’s
message of peace and justice is fulfilled in him. Campers learn and understand
ways they can become peacemakers when they go home.
The
cost for Diocese of Vermont campers is $315 for each one-week session
($365 for all others). We are looking forward to another exciting summer
at Rock Point with you. Registration forms will soon be available for download.
