Workshops
“I love to Tell the Story” is this year’s
Convention theme, and the Convention Program Planning Committee is
developing workshops in keeping with this theme.
1 Storytelling Through the Bible, with
The Rev. Joel Hill
In this workshop, we will explore ways to tell the Biblical
story by heart. Participants may be new to storytelling or they may be
experienced tellers. In this workshop, we will learn two stories; The
Return of Ruth and Naomi from Moab to Judea and the story of the Syro-phoenician
woman who asks that her daughter be healed. We will learn how these stories
were told in their original context, explore how and in what context
the story fits in today's culture and try telling one or both of them
to one other person. There are a variety of ways to learn a story “by
heart” and we will explore some of those ways to find out what
works best for your learning style.
2 Telling the Story with Children, with Jenny Ogelby
Come to this workshop and discover the many ways to share the story of
God and God’s love with children. Godly Play, paper bag drama,
tableaus, art and music are just a few of the resources we will explore
in this hands-on workshop. Bring some ideas and resources of your own
and we will share with one another. This workshop is offered for all
those interested in helping children hear and receive the sacred stories
of the Christian life and faith. Learn how to make those stories come
alive for children and how to help make those stories part of their story.
3 Telling the Story Through Our Ministry of Money, with
the Rev. Angie Emerson
God’s story of faithfulness, generosity, and reconciliation is reflected
in how individuals and communities understand their own relationship to
material wealth. The spiritual discipline of giving and sharing money and
material wealth is an expression of trust in God’s faithfulness and
gratitude for that which God has entrusted to our care. Giving allows us
to deeply and richly experience God’s grace and generosity, lifts
us out of a false sense of security and self-reliance, creates powerful
resistance to anxiety and fear, and connects us with the power of the Holy
Spirit. Come and discover God at work in your life around material wealth
and learn to share that story with power and enthusiasm.
4
Telling the Story Through Liturgy, with the Rev. Patrick Malloy, professor
of liturgy at the General Theological Seminary
Patrick Malloy’s presentation (live in Burlington and via video
in Randolph and Brattleboro) will focus on the restorative, healing,
and sustaining quality of liturgy in all of our lives as a sacramental
people. In particular, participants in this workshop will discuss the
role of liturgy in the lives of oppressed or marginalized people – past
and present – as an anchor and inspiration in their struggle for
inclusion.
